Bacteriol. 89:1354-1369. 1965.-An investigation of the mode of action of phenethyl alcohol produced the following results. Phenethyl alcohol had no effect on the physicochemical properties of isolated deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). The DNA isolated from phenethyl alcohol-treated bacteria had physicochemical properties identical with those of DNA isolated from normal cells. The metabolic functions most sensitive to the inhibitory action of phenethyl alcohol appeared to be the process of enzyme induction and, possibly, the synthesis of messenger ribonucleic acid. Phenethyl alcohol did not affect the polyuridylic acid-mediated synthesis of polyphenylalanine in a cell-free amino acid-incorporating system.

Phenethyl alcohol is known to be bacteriostatic to certain gram-negative microorganisms (B. 0. Lilley and J. H. Brewer, J. Am. Pharm. Assoc. Sci. Ed. 43:6, 1953) and to inhibit reversibly deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) synthesis of Escherichia coli while allowing ribonucleic acid (RNA) and protein synthesis to proceed (G. Berrah and W. A. Konetzka, J. Bacteriol. 83:738, 1962; R. W. Treick and W. A...
متن کاملRejoining of radiation-induced single-strand breaks in deoxyribonucleic acid of Escherichia coli: effect of phenethyl alcohol.
Single-strand breaks in deoxyribonucleic acid of Escherichia coli B/r cells exposed to 20 krads of gamma radiation could be rejoined by incubation of irradiated cells in growth medium. In the presence of 0.25% phenethyl alcohol, this repair was completely inhibited although deoxyribonucleic acid and protein syntheses were suppressed only partially.

ERRAH and KONETZKA (1962) reported that phenethyl alcohol (PEA) selectively and reversibly inhibits DNA synthesis in Escherichia coli. It was subsequently shown that PEA inhibits the initiation of a new cycle of DNA replication in this organism but permits the completion of those cycles initiated before addition of PEA to the medium (TREICK and KONETZKA 1964). We reasoned therefore that genetic...
